| INTRODUCTION TO TMV |
Wouldn't it be great if you could determine what others are paying before you visit a dealer? We think so. That's why Edmunds's created True Market Value (TMV) pricing, the proprietary system that takes into account all market variables and gives you the bottom line price. Updated monthly, it's a guide that tells you what buyers are currently paying for new vehicles - or what dealers and consumers are paying and getting for used vehicles - before you begin your negotiations. Edmunds's True Market Value pricing system for new and used vehicles is the industry's best guide to market value pricing and the only pricing system designed with the consumer in mind.
| TMV FOR USED VEHICLES |
TMV pricing for used vehicles is generated by Edmunds using actual transaction data: millions of records of used car sales for thousands of makes, models and styles, in all regions of the country and in all colors, updated on a regular basis. This data is sorted, cleaned, analyzed, and processed, and becomes the basis of TMV used vehicle pricing. The Edmunds TMV team then applies a complex and proprietary set of rules to this data to determine TMV prices for individual vehicles.
It is a complex, labor-intensive process, but we think it's worth the trouble; it allows Edmunds to publish the industry's best pricing: pricing that represents actual market transactions as opposed to the much less meaningful suggested offering prices that other companies publish.
The Autos channel presents two categories of TMV pricing for used vehicles:
Please note that Edmunds TMV used vehicle prices do not take into account tax, title or license/registration fees.
This is an estimate of what customers are paying dealers for similar vehicles in your area. This value will be higher than the Private Party price due, in part, to the inspection, reconditioning and other costs a dealer must incur before selling the vehicle.
This is an estimate of what others are receiving from dealers when they trade-in a vehicle.

It is important to note that these values do factor in the current manufacturer-to-dealer incentives that may be in effect. These incentive programs provide rebates directly to the dealer, which should result in a reduced TMV.
Please note that the TMV new vehicle prices do not take into account the following items:
An Edmunds team of statisticians, researchers, programmers, and pricing managers work continuously to refine and improve TMV pricing for new vehicles. A complex, proprietary formula for estimating the TMV for new vehicles takes into account a number of factors, including the vehicle's invoice price, manufacturer's suggested retail price, current supply and demand for that vehicle, relative brand strength, and actual transaction prices.
